This September, Rutgers University Press will release The Deoliwallahs: The True Story of the 1962 Chinese‑Indian Internment, co‑authored by Joy Ma and Dilip D’Souza. The book brings long‑overdue attention to a chapter of Indian history that has remained largely unexamined for more than sixty years: the incarceration of Chinese‑Indians during the Sino‑Indian War.
In 1962, as tensions escalated between China and India, the Indian government detained more than 3,000 Chinese‑Indians in a remote camp in Deoli, Rajasthan. The book documents this history through survivor testimonies, archival research, and political analysis. Joy, an alumna of the Writers Conference, was born in the Deoli camp. More info here.
