Dagoberto Gilb is the author of eleven books, including his two most recent, New Testaments (City Lights) and A Passing West (New Mexico), winner of 2025 PEN America’s Diamonstein/Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. Previous honors are the PEN/Hemingway Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Whiting Writers Award, and the PEN Southwest Award. His books have been a finalist for the National Book Critics’ Circle and PEN/Faulkner Awards and have been honored several times in Texas as part of its literary heritage. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in many publications including The New Yorker, Harper’s, Best American Essays, O’Henry Prize Stories, much of it widely reprinted in textbooks and anthologies. He is the founder of Huizache, a groundbreaking literary magazine that features Latino writing.
